Welcome to Week 2

Good afternoon parents,

Welcome to another fantastic week in Year 3...I hope that you all enjoyed (survived) the return to winter sport over the weekend?!

REMINDERS - WEEK 2

Go Fish Musical Meeting - Is on this afternoon (7th May) beginning at 3.15pm in the Hall. Please let Mrs Horrocks know if you are able to help with costumes, props or catering but are unable to make the meeting this afternoon.

Mothers Day Breakfast - is being held in the Hall on Friday morning 11th May...please make sure that you have sent your RSVP to Fran Marrell at the Front Office. It begins at 7.30am and is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all the amazing mums in our community!

Reading Books - Just a reminder that I am getting a bit tough on only changing these on Monday's. The books sent home are suitable for your child's reading level and are meant to be read more than once...this helps to build vocabulary, sight word recognition and familiarity with the text.

Haircuts - It is getting to that time where hair, particularly in the fringe area is getting a bit too long. If your son or daughter's hair falls over their eyes, it must be pinned back. Hair that is over the collar must also be tied up.

I would appreciate your support in organising haircuts as soon as you are able.

Times Tables Chart - I have sent a copy home with your child today...please pop this in the toilet or on the fridge!

OUR LEARNING - WEEK 2

We are continuing our learning around narratives and what makes a good character description using the STEAL technique. This is where we build the picture in our reader's minds in which we describe the speech/voice used by our character, the thoughts and feelings of our character, their effect on others and the actions and looks of our characters. We started a fantastic piece of modelled writing about Mrs McCarthy and her ginger cat Pickles.

On Thursday and Friday's we are having the students have a practice at a NAPLAN style assessment where they are asked to respond to a given stimulus in either the Narrative or Persuasive genre.

In maths we have been looking at the Split Strategy. This is used to multiply large numbers.

For example:
7 x 45 = 7 x 40 + 7 x 5
          =   280   +  35 = 315

This is proving to be quite tricky for some of the students and has really highlighted the need to work on times tables!

HOMEWORK - WEEK 1

Please see below the homework that has been assigned for the week.

Reading - All reading is to be written into their reading log, including the name of the book and number of pages and then signed by you.

Please note - Reading books are to be changed on a Monday only. At the moment I am getting dribs and drabs which is not easy to facilitate so I will stand firm on this.

Spelling - Students are to complete a LCWC of their list words for the week.

I ask that students do not go ahead and complete all of their LCWC in one day as this means that they are not seeing the words again until they are tested on Friday and this doesn't help with their retention of the concept being covered.

Sight Words - If you can please work with your child to complete these every night. It is great to ask your child the definition of the word or to use that word in a sentence as well if you have time?

I will move ahead on retesting students this week for those that have had theirs for some time.

Mental Maths - Students are to complete Days 1-4 of Unit 12. This is marked daily in class each morning. It is fine if students work ahead on this.

Please see the link below for assistance if needed.

Times Tables - Activity Sheet - 2 x Times Tables. Students are asked to write out their tables in order on Monday and Tuesday nights and then complete them out of order on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

The Australian Curriculum requires that students in Year 3 are fluent in their 2, 3, 5 & 10 times tables by the end of the year.

We feel that working ahead on all times tables is incredibly important so please make sure that your child is reviewing their 2's this week.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Have a great week,

Mrs Delane
