Welcome to Week 2

Good afternoon parents,

Welcome to Week 2 in 4DEL! I hope that you enjoyed the weekend and spent some time catching up on a bit of rest. The first week back is always tough...we ride the roller coaster of excited to complete exhaustion in just a couple of days.

I am hoping that your child has enjoyed the first week back as much as I have (a big nap for me today sure helped!).

I would also like to say a very big thank you to you all for having the students so well prepared for their return...the stationery, the book lists and the uniforms plus the recess and lunches is a lot and it is greatly appreciated!

This week we will begin working our way into our normal schedule including reading groups and our swap for Science and Health on Thursday.

REMINDERS - WEEK 2

Parent Information Night - Please note this is on Tuesday 11th February beginning at 5pm. There will be two sessions (repeated) with a quick chat from Eugene in between. We would love to see you there...if you are unable to make it, we will put up a copy of our presentation on to the blog so you can see what you missed.

Change of Date - Our Year 4 Family and Enrolment mass which was originally scheduled for Saturday 29th February has been moved to Saturday 7th March. We hope this date is a little easier to manage and look forward to seeing all Year 4 families there.

Files - Can you please check with your child if they still need another file. Some students only brought in the one and still need another.

Swimming Trials - These will be held on Tuesday 18th February. More information to follow!

Family Details Form & Laptop User Agreement - Both of these were sent home last week. The family details form just needs to be checked and any changes noted, please send these in with your child. The laptop user agreement needs to be read through and signed by your child and yourselves.

Please return these asap.

OUR LEARNING

We have spent the first part of the term getting ourselves settled into our routines and procedures. We have begun looking at Narratives in our writing sessions and the students are beginning to look at the structure and language features that are needed to make a good narrative, that is one that entertains our reader.

In your nightly reading, if you can draw attention to the character and setting descriptions, this helps the students to connect their learning to stories they love. The more good stories they read, the better understanding they have.

In our reading groups we will be doing some reader's theatre. The students will be given a script to read and perform, this gives the students a great opportunity to work on their reading fluency skills. All students have identified a particular skill they would like to focus on such as, intonation, rate, pacing, expression, stress, punctuation or accuracy. Check in with your child what they have chosen.

In maths we have begun looking at whole numbers as well as identifying if a number is odd or even. We will be looking at place value of numbers up to 9 999. Place value is a tricky core skill that helps students in all areas of their maths learning. We will be looking at the positioning of numbers in a place value chart and then what value that number has.

In art this week we will begin looking at the Elements of Art beginning with line and how we can use this element to create effective pieces of artwork.

In religion we will be looking at our Unit of Work - Coming To Your Table. We will start off with discussing the elements of different celebrations and then moving into how Jesus celebrated with friends in the significance of the Last Supper. This leads us beautifully in to how we celebrate the Last Supper each time we gather to celebrate mass and receive communion.

Our science focus this term is looking at how the earth's surface has changed over time due to natural and human processes.

HOMEWORK - WEEK 2

This year the school has changed our approach to homework. We acknowledge and highly value an approach to homework that is family friendly and has a wide range of activities that reflect student's interests.

Our homework grid is to be completed over the week from Monday to Thursday and is due in on Friday morning to be checked. If you can please make sure that your child has chased you around the house so you can sign their grid, I would be most appreciative!

Your child has been given a hard copy which they have glued into their homework book. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you again for a fantastic start to the term!

Kind regards,

Caitlin Delane
