Week 3 - Term 3

Good afternoon parents,

Welcome to a very special week for the students of 3D...this week we will be hosting a whole school mass on Friday morning beginning at 9am in the Hall. It would be great to have as many of you in attendance as possible.

REMINDERS - WEEK 3

Whole School Mass - As mentioned above is on Friday. For those students with readings, can I please ask you to practice with them out loud throughout the week. We will also be practicing in class but I really want the children to feel confident so the more times the better!

Stationery Items - If I can ask you to please check your child's stationery...many students have no glue, scissors or pencils.

Also, as a huge fan of stationery myself I can appreciate the joy of Smiggle!! However, if you can please remind your child that funky stationery is for the purpose of completing their assigned tasks and should not be a distraction to those around them.

Sight Words - All students were retested last week and were either given a new set of words to work on or another copy if they have gone missing. My aim is to test these words every fortnight to keep the students motivated. Many students have finished the set and will not be given any more...if you are not sure if your child still needs to be doing sight words, please let me know.

Reading Books - If your child does not come home with a school reader, this means that they are above Level 30 and are classified as an independent reader and can read a text of their own choosing.

Please make sure those with school readers are reading them multiple times, this exposes them to familiar words and gives them confidence to read. These will continue to be changed on Monday mornings.

Reading Log - Over the last term, it has become apparent that these are not being either filled in or signed. We know that many of the children are reading at night but it is important that this is filled in as part of their homework.

School Uniforms - I know this can be an onerous and expensive task and I appreciate your efforts to send the students to class in the right uniform but there are a few things that need to be tidied up:

  • Black Jackets - these are to be worn over the top of the green school jumpers only and are not to be worn in class. If there are extenuating circumstances, a note is to be given to Mr Wilkie as soon as possible.
  • Hair Styles - if your child's hair is longer than their collar it must be tied up. This is the same for both boys and girls. Fringes must be pinned back or tied up if they fall into the face...I am spending a fortune on hair ties and pins at the moment.
  • Sneakers - as per our current policy, please make sure that your child is wearing sneakers that are predominantly white or light grey with plain white ankle socks. There should be no visible logos from sport, surf or skate brands on socks.
  • Jewelry - these are to be kept simple and at a minimum. No leather or bali style bands are to be worn around the wrist or ankles.
OUR LEARNING - WEEK 3

We have had a practice at sequencing an Informative Text...this gave the students the opportunity to group their facts together and place them in order to make the text flow well. They also had a chance to group facts under their own headings on a given topic...this one proved quite a challenge!

In the coming week we will be putting together a modeled text - this is a text where all of the students are working together with me to group and order facts and then begin to write it out as a whole piece. The students will then create their own fact file, group and order them and then write their own text on a topic of their choice.

In maths we have been looking at inverse operations which has been a lot of fun! This is understanding that addition and subtraction are opposites and multiplication and division are opposite also...we have been looking at number families and how this works when I apply the opposite operation.

In geography we have been looking at the emblems of each state and how they reflect the nature of that state. The students have had an opportunity to create their own coat of arms to express who they are as a person...these will be finished in the coming days and up for display!

During our religion lessons, we have been talking about the importance of making good choices and how we can do this when showing kindness to our friends, family, parents and teachers. The students have created a small piece of art showing a way they have shown kindness. These will be on display during our mass on Friday.

HOMEWORK - WEEK 3

As a parent, I can understand that getting your child to complete their homework without WWIII can be quite a challenge!

I do ask that please encourage them as much as you can. It is important they are building good homework habits as well as working to retain the literacy and numeracy facts being covered in class and through the review of the mental maths and our spelling groups.

Reading - All reading is to be written into their reading log, including the name of the book and number of pages and then signed by you.

Please note - Reading books are to be changed on a Monday only.

Spelling - Students are to complete a LCWC of their list words for the week.

Sight Words - If you can please work with your child to complete these every night.

Mental Maths - Students are to complete Days 1-4 of Unit 22 This is marked daily in class each morning. It is fine if students work ahead on this.

Times Tables - Activity Sheet - 7 Times Tables. Students are asked to write out their tables in order on Monday and Tuesday nights and then complete them out of order on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Wishing you a fantastic week,

Mrs Delane
