Week 4 Has Arrived

Good afternoon parents,

Welcome to Week 4...I spent the weekend up in the big smoke watching my daughter play in the Country Week Championships for Basketball...it was great to see so many participants out there doing what they love...the Busselton girls were also lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to meet JP Tokoto from the Perth Wildcats...lucky!

REMINDERS - WEEK 4

Opening Mass - We will come together as a whole school to celebrate Mass on Friday 23rd February at 9.30am down at Our Lady of the Southern Cross. It would be wonderful to see as many parents there as possible.

Morning Routine - Now that swimming lessons are out of the way we are in full swing with our teaching and learning programs. This has meant that this week we began our spelling rotations between the Year 1-3 students.

It is really important that your child arrives at school as close to 8.30 as possible so they can get themselves set up and ready for the day.

Book Donations - Our 3D bookshelf is looking a little bare! If your child has any spare books that would be suitable, they would be greatly appreciated by all in 3D.

OUR LEARNING - WEEK 4

In our Literacy lessons, we have been looking at how to PEE in a paragraph...this is a good writing technique that is helpful when writing a persuasive text to get your point across. We have looked at the importance of making a point (P), providing evidence (E) to support the point and an explanation (E) to further persuade the reader to our point of view.

Last week students began to plan and draft their own PEE paragraph on a topic of their own choice...these will be finished and up for display later in the week, please come in and check them out...hopefully we have managed to persuade you to install an aquarium, skate park and wave pool in at OLC as well as making sure that we can all bring our pets to school!

In our Maths lessons, we have been consolidating our learning around place value and we also got ourselves logged in to Mathletics. This is an online tool which allows me to set differentiated tasks for each student based upon their understanding of a given topic.

If your child would like to access Mathletics at home, with your permission they are very welcome to do so. Their log in details have been glued in to the front page of their homework.

In our HASS lesson, we have begun learning about the major cities and regional areas of Australia, we have also had some discussion around why these major centres are located where they are. We have begun looking at some mapping skills to help the students learn about the states and territories of Australia, as well as the capital cities.

We also had our first Friendology session on Friday. Mr Mac and I decided it would be beneficial to split the boys and girls into two groups so that we can target the content to them specifically.

This program is aimed at giving students the skills and strategies to develop and nurture healthy and positive friendships. Please see below for a couple of photos of the strategies and wording that we use here at school. This can be reinforced at home with your child if they are having any friendship issues.

I will also send home a copy of Notes that may be helpful for you to read so that you know what kinds of things will be covered during our sessions. These will last all year.

All girls in Years 3-6 are also invited to the Friendology Lunch Club which will be held on Wednesday's in 3D.

We are integrating our Art and Science this term and we started off with a cool activity in which the students listened to some space sounds and were asked to imagine the view if they were sitting on the moon! The students came up with some really creative pieces!

During their Earth Science unit with Mr Mac, they will be studying the movement of the earth and moon which will be really interesting!

HOMEWORK - WEEK 4

Please see below the homework that has been assigned for the week.

Reading - Home readers were sent home today, we ask that your child reads this book first before moving on the a book of their own choice. This book does not have to be finished in one night...readers will be swapped on Mondays and Wednesdays. This will be done by the fabulous Mrs Derickx and Mrs Annert...we ask that you leave it to them to do the swapping please.

All reading is to be written into their reading log and then signed by you.

Spelling - Students are to complete a LCWC of their list words for the week. Please make sure that they are colour coding their concept. This was demonstrated in class today.

I ask that students do not go ahead and complete all of their LCWC in one day as this means that they are not seeing the words again until they are tested on Friday and this doesn't help with their retention of the concept being covered.

Sight Words - These were also be sent home with your child today, if you can please work with your child to complete these every night. It is great to ask your child the definition of the word or to use that word in a sentence as well if you have time?

If your child can please make sure they are taking care with their bag as well as we will reuse these each week.

Mental Maths - Students are to complete Days 1-4 of Unit 4. Please see the link below for assistance if needed?

Unit 4 Strategy - Add 10, Add 100

Times Tables - We are also asking students to write out their 2 times tables in their homework books. They are to be written as 1x2=2, 2x2=4...etc.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Have a great week,

Mrs Delane
