Week 11 is Finally Here!
Good afternoon parents,
Welcome to Week 11...it has been an incredibly busy term and the students have really been coming along in leaps and bounds! I was away last week with a nasty case of laryngitis (not sunning myself on a beach unfortunately!!!) which made the Easter break not so fun...I hope that you enjoyed celebrating this special time with family and friends. Mrs Martin was full of praise for the students and how focused and settled the students were which was lovely to hear!
Parent - Teacher Meetings - they will begin today from 3.30pm. Meetings will run for 10 minutes...as you have seen the schedule you can appreciate that I have very little turn around time between meetings. I ask that you please make sure that you are on time for your meeting.
I do feel very rude and I do apologise but I will run a timer through the meeting so that I stay on time...as you might have worked out I do like a chat and I want to be mindful of respecting the time of others!
If I can ask that you enter through the wet area - this has a glass door that will be closed but you can see through it rather than coming in through the outside door and possibly interrupting another meeting.

We have had a very busy time looking at the properties of 3D shapes in our maths...the next concept that we will be moving to looking at is time. I will begin some preliminary work on that this week and we will continue into next term.
In our literacy lessons we have been looking at setting descriptions...we have begun looking at Abandoned Places and focusing on what we can see, hear, feel and touch. We will then look at turning this into a descriptive piece of writing to really help build the picture in the mind of our readers.
Please see below the homework that has been assigned for the week.
Reading - This week I am asking the students to read for pleasure. There is no reading log to be filled in and signed this week.
It is very important that the students are reading out loud at least a couple of times a week - this helps with their comprehension and self-correction strategies as well as reading with fluency, expression and intonation.
If you have time it would be great if you can ask your child different questions about what they have read to you.
Mix it up and ask them some questions in which they can refer back to the text for an easy answer.
For example - What colour was the cat? Which one is their house? What colour are his shorts?
You can then ask some more inferential questions where they have to dig for clues in the text and think about what the author has said.
For example - How do we know that Mary was angry with her brother? Why do you think...? Why did the character...?
Spelling - Students are to complete a LCWC of their list words for the week.
I ask that students do not go ahead and complete all of their LCWC in one day as this means that they are not seeing the words again until they are tested on Friday and this doesn't help with their retention of the concept being covered.
Sight Words - If you can please work with your child to complete these every night. It is great to ask your child the definition of the word or to use that word in a sentence as well if you have time?
Mental Maths - Students are to complete Days 1-4 of Unit 10. This is marked daily in class each morning. It is fine if students work ahead on this.
