Welcome Back

Good morning parents,

Welcome back for our final term...I hope that you had a chance to enjoy a slower pace over the last couple of weeks. I enjoyed not making lunches and ironing uniforms for sure!

It has to be said that the highlight of the holidays was watching the AFL Grand Final...it was a cracker game and watching the Eagles come back to win in the last minutes was awesome! I am sure the whole town heard me yelling!!!

In our PD session yesterday, as a staff we spent the day examining our knowledge and ideas about Mary. It was a very interesting day and I learnt a lot about Mary as a person and as Jesus' mother. I identify with her as a role model as a mother and as a woman. She was strong and capable and lived through some very difficult times - including the loss of her child.

Mrs Ricciardone and I spent the afternoon working on a display that will help to share some of this information about Mary as well as sharing our understanding of the Rosary and how to pray it with the students.

We will be asking students to ponder their own ideas about Mary and draw a picture that reflects their connection and understanding of Mary.

Please see below for a few reminders for the coming weeks!

We will also be having a student from Edith Cowan University - Bunbury Campus coming to spend 4 weeks in our class from the 22nd October to the 16th November. Miss Melita Ivers is in her second year of teaching and I am looking forward to having her in our class. As the weeks progress she will teach small groups and then move to teaching a couple of whole class lessons each day.

She will be coming in tomorrow to spend the day observing how our classroom is run and getting to know the kids.

REMINDERS - WEEK 1

Summer Uniform - Please take advantage of the next couple of weeks to get your child in the correct uniform. See the link  for our updated OLC School Uniform Policy. If I can also ask you to think about your son or daughter's hair style as well. It is particularly relevant for fringes.

Sacrament of Reconciliation - Is on Wednesday 24th October beginning at 6pm at Our Lady of the Southern Cross. All students are expected to attend, even if your child is not receiving the sacrament it is important that they attend to support their classmates.

Please make sure that you have returned the necessary paperwork and the $12 please.

During our session with Sr. Christine yesterday, we also examined our understanding of the Sacraments. She shared a very helpful video which looks at how the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Penance) is given. This video was put together to assist parents to know what they can expect and to answer any questions you may have.

Even if your child is not receiving the sacrament, it would be interesting for you and your child to watch to help their understanding of the this experience.

Hats - If you can please make sure that your child is bringing their hat each day and that it is clearly labelled. I am having a large number of students each day without their hat each day...I am happy if your child would like to leave them in their drawer so they know where they are?

OUR LEARNING - TERM 4

It is shaping up to be another busy term in Year 3...we wouldn't have it any other way of course!

In literacy, we will be reviewing the structure and language features of a persuasive text in which the students will need to write a short persuasive text on the topic 'Junk food should be banned at school'. We will then finalise our poetry unit in which the students will finish looking at the sound and word play used in poetry before they will try their hand at writing a narrative poem! We will then move to Procedure Writing...we will have a Christmas theme for this writing series as Mr McSevich REALLY loves Christmas!!

In Number and Algebra we will be looking at multiplication and division facts, multiplication and division mental strategies and multiplication written strategies. We will also be looking at fractions and fractions on a number line in our Measurement and Geometry strand as well as finishing off chance events and chance experiments in Statistics and Probability.

In Religion we will continue our teaching and learning about Reconciliation. This term we will be focusing on the Act of Contrition and the Rite of Reconciliation. We will also be asking the students to think about some of the things that they are sorry for in preparation to receive the sacrament.

The Act of Contrition that the students will be using is outlined below. It would be great if you could take some time to discuss this and practice with your child in the coming weeks.

"Oh my God, I am very sorry that I have sinned against you, because you are so good, and with your help I will try not to sin again - Amen"

In our HASS learning area we will be looking at exploring our own community including their features, climates, rules and the history of Dunsborough.

HOMEWORK - WEEK 1

Please see below the homework that has been assigned for the coming week.

Please make sure your child is practicing the Act of Contrition if they will be receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation.

Sight Words - If you can please work with your child to complete these every night.

Mental Maths - Students are to complete Days 1-4 of Unit 30. This is marked daily in class each morning. It is fine if students work ahead on this.
