Welcome to Week 2!

Good afternoon parents,

Welcome to another week of learning in 3D. I enjoyed a fantastic weekend at Donnelly River for Family Camp 2018...we were so blessed with the weather. It only rained a little early in the morning and at night which is quite a contrast to the weather that you had on Saturday! This is one of the friendly locals who joined me on the porch...after my daughter had accidentally spilt half of a 5kg bag of birdseed all over it!

The view from my balcony...a perfect spot to have a cuppa and watch the kids ride around and around and around! If you haven't had a chance to attend yet, I highly recommend it. This is a fantastic experience for the families of OLC and a very special tradition...the washing and scrapes and bumps I can do without but a wonderful weekend!

REMINDERS - WEEK 2

Hats - Please make sure your child is bringing their hat each day!

SAFE Colouring Competition - Submissions for this is due on Monday 22nd October. If your child would like to submit one, please make sure it is by this date. We are asking all students to bring in a gold coin donation - this will go directly to SAFE to support the sick and injured animals.

Reconciliation - Is on Wednesday 24th October, please make sure you are practicing the Act of Contrition with your child if they are receiving the sacrament. Please make sure that all money and paperwork is in by Wednesday.

OUR LEARNING - WEEK 2

We started the term with a fantastic day spent listening to a presentation from Constable Care about how we can be safe online...the students had the opportunity think about the information that they give out online and what to do if they find themselves in a situation that makes them uncomfortable. This tied in very well to the teaching that Mrs Meyer has been doing in Digital Technologies.

We were then lucky enough to also have Scitech come and spend time talking to the kids about the properties of different materials and all the kids had a blast! There was slime...need I say more?!

On Friday we had a fantastic health lesson in which we were looking at the nutritional information that is included on packaging. The students made some great observations about what kind of information is put on packaging to help or hinder us in making healthy food choices. The students will be planning their own healthy creation next!

We noticed the writing was often very small!
They use catchy phrases like 'wholegrain' 'healthy star rating' and 'low in sugar' to try to influence us to buy their product!
In Design Technologies, the students from both classes mixed together to look at the different properties of materials...they need to examine them to see if they would sink or float, were flexible or rigid, absorbent or waterproof. This will lead into the students being asked to create something bearing in mind the knowledge they have of the properties of different materials.

In art, we looked at the work of local artist Ian Mutch. The students were asked to choose one of their favourite pieces from the selected works and discuss and describe what they could see, what medium was used and how it made them feel.

HOMEWORK WEEK 2

Reading -Please make sure that your child is reading out loud to you each night.

Spelling - Students are to complete a LCWC of their list words for the week. These are review words for this week as they will be tested on the words covered over the past months - a quick run through for your child would be great for their confidence!

Sight Words - If you can please work with your child to complete these every night.

Mental Maths - Students are to complete Days 1-4 of Unit 31 INCLUDING the Think Box activity. This is marked daily in class each morning. It is fine if students work ahead on this.

Times Tables - Activity Sheet - 2 Times Tables. Students are asked to write out their tables in order on Monday and Tuesday nights and then complete them out of order on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Have a fantastic week!

Mrs Delane
