End of Week 2 Blog

KAYA!
We have had a
very busy first two weeks of term 3 and all students have settled in well.
Thank you to
those parents who have been in touch with us. Open communication is very important!
Uthando
Dolls
In keeping with OLC tradition, the children will
be involved in the worldwide Uthando Doll project this term. Throughout this
unit of work, the students will be working with a partner to stuff, sew, dress
and accessorise a doll that will be sent to a child in need in the Kwazulu
Natal community in South Africa. This project incorporates a range of outcomes
from the Design Technologies curriculum, as well as fostering a sense of
ownership in the students, with a focus on greater community needs.
This project will run over the whole of Term 3 and
will require parent help. I will be very grateful if a parent or grandparent
would volunteer their time, for one hour per week during our Technology Session
(Year 4 Del Wednesday 12-1pm) (Year 4 Dan Wednesday 1.40-2.40pm) to assist the
children with hand sewing, cutting and creating their doll from a provided kit.
Two volunteers per session should be adequate.
Thanks in advance for your support,
Anne Coltrinari
Merit Awards
Congratulations to Ari and Keenan on receiving the
merit awards for the first two weeks of term.
Mathematics
In math we
have been learning all about money!
We have been doing an interesting project on a ‘Day at Leisure Land’ which involved students spending $100 on a variety of rides, activities, and food. Look out for a Seesaw post in the coming weeks about this.
Literacy
Students were each given a Magpie book last week which they will use for the reminder of the year.
Gathering ideas in a notebook is a valuable way to support the
developing writer. They will learn and try things out before committing them
into longer pieces of writing. The books are a storehouse of ideas and
creativity. When reading, the children are encouraged to “magpie” favourite
words and phrases for use later on.
Night
With Nev
We have introduced
a ‘Night with Nev’ this term which involves a child taking home a teddy dog
called Nev. Each child needs to take two photos of Nev on their laptop and
write two sentences about what he got up to. This will then be turned into a book
that we will share with our pre-primary buddy class.
Interschool Cross Country
Well done to Marlee, Sienna, Jett, Finn, Emme,
Hamish and Milla who represented OLC at the interschool cross country carnival
in Bunbury on Thursday.
Thanks!
Claire Gilpin and
Vanessa Gleeson
