Welcome to Week 3

Good afternoon parents,

Welcome to another fantastic week in 4DEL.

I hope those of you that were busy ferrying your cherubs to and from their activities had a moment to have a chat and a warm cuppa whilst doing so...the scheduling Gods smiled on me this weekend with both of my guys playing in Busso requiring 1 car and a chance to watch Tobes before scooting off to play Manager for Ella's hockey team!

Mixed results but tired, happy and grateful kids!! We are so lucky to have the opportunities for sport that we do down here!

REMINDERS - WEEK 2

Exercise books - thank you so much for being so on to this! Most students have a full deck of new books and have paid their back...thank you!

Absence - a reminder that I will be absent on Monday as I will be up in Perth attending PD. Mrs Dorrington will be in class for me and the kids are so well organised that they can run the class without me!

Please also keep Mr Lee in your thoughts as he recovers. He is very much missed and we hope that he is well enough to be back at school soon!

If I can also ask that you keep our beautiful EA Mrs Derickx in your prayers as well, her father passed away in the last week of term and she is missing him very much.

Cross Country - is on this Thursday 30th July at Bunbury Grammar. Please check Mrs Sinclair's note for details on departure times and any items needed.

OUR LEARNING -

We had a fantastic start to our week once we woke up and realised that we were back at school.

In our writing sessions, we have been learning about the structure needed to make a really good persuasive text. We are likening our texts to a really good hamburger...the students engaged with this really well and this imagery helps them to understand that their reader doesn't want to be disappointed with their order!

We have also been talking about the kind of language that we need in our writing...we really want to persuade our reader to agree with us. Strong modality words such as 'it is vital that...', 'you must agree...' or 'I strongly believe...' with powerful phrases really help us to get our point across...perhaps try some at home when you are asking them to clean up their rooms!

Our reading group activities are also focused on reading good examples of persuasive texts in a variety of forms.

Our maths lessons this week have been focused on time, looking at the parts of the clock (face, minute and hour hand) as well how to tell the time and represent time by drawing hands on a clock. We will continue looking at this again this week before moving on to calculating elapsed time. Get them to think, how much has passed since I sat down to watch TV, until I have to go to training/dancing/bed etc.

Through our religion, MJR and Friendology lessons this week we have also been talking about developing a growth mindset around our strengths and weaknesses personally and in our learning. We have also been looking at words of empowerment that we can use as a reminder that we are awesome when we need a little pick me up or feel a little bogged down with the challenges of life or our learning!

Perhaps encourage your child to find a few of these to print or draw and then put somewhere that they will see them regularly...the back of the toilet door or the bathroom are a good place to start.

In our Friendology session on Friday we also had a great chat about the importance of being ourselves in our friendships. We spoke about how it is important that we are being authentic and totally ourselves and that we allow our friends to do the same.

It was a great opportunity to remind the students of treating their friends with care and respect and if they are finding things a little hard in a particular friendship that they may consider taking some time away to hang with some different peeps. The friend-o-meter is a great tool for the students to use as it is very visual!

We did also talk about letting our parents know if we are having trouble with a particular person as sometimes mums and dads are friends and organise social activities which can sometimes be uncomfortable if you aren't vibing with someone!

HOMEWORK - WEEK 2

It was a great start to the term for homework this week, most students had completed all of their tasks and had their learning grid signed.

Homework for this week includes:

  • Spelling - LCWC each night - please make sure that your child is MARKING their words each night.
  • Tables practice
  • Reading - out loud 10-15 minutes each night
  • Choice tasks - students are to complete 4 different activities from the bottom section of their grid. If you have any suggestions or ideas on different areas you need help in, please let me know.
  • Additional Homework- I have sent home an activity that we have been working on in our Keeping Safe lessons. Students need to rewrite the ending of the story of Henny Penny in a comic strip...this is an outstanding task that we have been working on in class from last term and last week and needs to be completed by Friday 31st July.

Have a great week!

Mrs Delane
