Week 6 Update

Good afternoon!

What a cracking weekend we have had...Spring is in the air! Kids sport yesterday was absolutely delightful and how good is it to NOT have to have drying racks set up inside!! I swear it's the simplest things!

A huge congratulations to our Star Citizen for Week 5, Freida Whitley!

Freida was a very worthy recipient for our Star Citizen Award for our school value of Respect.

4DEL also outdid themselves in the Jumps and Throws that have been held over the past two weeks, there were some great performances from everyone but a special mention to our new student Isabelle Casas who cleaned up in the shotput! How good is that, she's been here 3 days and makes Interschool, well done!

Great work Team 4DEL!!

REMINDERS - WEEK 6

Sports Carnival: Is on this Thursday 27th August beginning at 9am. Students are to wear their faction shirts on this day and please make sure that they pack plenty of snacks and water. I have spare notes in class if you think that you would like to take your child home at the end of the day.

Important Dates:

  • Friday 28th August is a pupil free day. As a staff we will be spending time looking at our Aboriginal Education Improvement Map with Leon Wridgeway as well as planning and implementing a Wellbeing focus for staff and students in the coming weeks.
  • Monday 1st of September is a Catholic Day for all staff so there will be no school on this day.

Science Research Project - I sent an email out last week outlining our research project for this term. We will begin choosing, researching and planning our presentations and Power Points in class this week. There is no expectation for students to be working on these at home at these stage.

                                    OUR LEARNING  - WEEK 5/6

Our writing sessions this week have been focused around using the Hamburger method to help us to plan and draft our persuasive texts on the topic of 'City Life is Better Than Country Life'. This is a really helpful visual for students to use as they all relate to eating their favourite type of burger, this helps them to understand that we can't have a burger without the top and bottom bun for example, just like we can't have a text without an introduction or conclusion.

In maths we have been looking at lines and angles. This week we have given the students an assignment in which they are going to be planning and creating their own mini golf course. They will need to include a variety of parallel and perpendicular lines as well as 2D shapes to add interest to their course. They will also need to show the angles a player would take to sink their ball in the hole! This will be worked on in class for the next 2 weeks, this is always a fun project and a great way for their imaginations to run wild!

In religion we will begin our new unit looking at Eucharist, which begins our preparation for those students that will be receiving the Sacrament in Term 4. Please see the parent letter outlined below.

RE: Religious Education Unit 4.4 Eucharist

Dear Parents/Carers

The Bishops of Western Australia have the responsibility of ensuring that Catholic schools teach the Religious Education Program that they have approved.

The purpose of Religious Education is to provide an understanding of the Christian message as it is handed on by the Catholic Church. Your child will be guided to study, research and learn what the Catholic Church teaches.

If your child is not Catholic, you are encouraged to share your religious beliefs with them and support them in understanding how to live according to your faith and when appropriate discuss the similarities and differences that they might experience.

The teaching of Religious Education is compulsory for all students in Catholic schools in Western Australia. Your child will have a thirty minute Religious Education lesson each day. They will also be expected to participate in praying and going to Mass throughout the year as part of the religious life of the school.

This Year 4 unit explores celebrations. Your child will learn the different ways and reasons why people celebrate.

Through the story ‘On Choosing Guests to be Invited,’ Jesus taught that people should not only include friends in their celebrations but also those who are often excluded. Using this story, your child will learn that Jesus teaches that he wants people to do good things without expecting anything in return.

Jesus celebrated with his friends. A special festival which Jesus and his friends celebrated was Passover. Jesus celebrated Passover with his closest friends on the night of the Last Supper. Your child will learn that from the Last Supper event, people remember Jesus in the celebration of the Eucharist.

There are different parts to the Mass. Your child will focus on the Liturgy of the Eucharist, where people receive Holy Communion to grow closer in friendship with Jesus and be more like him in the world.

In science we conducted experiments to look at the absorbency of different materials. Students were asked to see which of the materials given were more absorbent and how much water was not absorbed.

Our art session last week was spent looking at the work of the street artist Banksy and the students had a go at imitating his writing style! In the coming weeks we will look at how he uses stencils in his work to help him get in and out quickly and undetected!

As always we are working hard in 4DEL!

HOMEWORK  - WEEK 6

  • Spelling - LCWC each night - please make sure that you or your child is MARKING their words each night.
  • Tables practice
  • Reading - out loud 10-15 minutes each night
  • Additional Homework - At various times through the week and into the term I may send home work to be completed that has not been completed in the given class time. I will always make sure that there is a reasonable time limit given to hand the work back in and please know, class time has always been given to complete it.
Have a good week!

Mrs Delane
